Mission Espíritu Santo: A mission for the Aranamas

“Originally established near present Matagorda Bay, Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zuñiga was moved to this San Antonio River location in 1749. Here, for more than 70 years, the Franciscan missionaries taught the native Aranama peoples the religious principles and craft skills they needed to become good Spanish citizens on the remote northern frontier. The immense herds of cattle that supported the mission population became the foundation for the ranching industry of modern Texas.

Mission Espíritu Santo officially became a secular church in 1830 and for a time was the site of Aranama College. The buildings gradually fell into disuse, and people in Goliad used the stones for buildings in town. During the 1930s, craftsmen in the Work Projects Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps programs reconstructed de mission chapel, granary and workshop buildings.” (Credit to Goliad State Park https://texastimetravel.com/directory/goliad-state-park-mission-espiritu-santo-de/)

This tree was buzzing with thousands of bees. It was fun standing under it and hearing their busy wings going from one flower to the next.

This is the church and courtyard.

I love to see the carvings and motif used on this door.

Many prayers were sent upwards to heaven from this little candles.

Muitas orações subiram ao céu destas velinhas.

The altar. O altar.

A vida na missão.

Family Reunion – Day 3

We stoped at St. George for some deserved rest and site seeing. From there we went strait to Salt Lake City, Utah. After lunch at Chuck-a-Rama we headed north. We dropped Dan off with some of his friends in Provo and made our way to Mom and Dad’s place in Ogden. But before heading north, here is what we visit.

In St. George, we had tickets to the “Blueprints of Liberty” museum that Glenn Beck had setup in the Washington County Admin Bldg. It was cool to see all the American history.

We also stopped by the Winter Home of President Brigham Young.

Family Reunion – Day 2

We woke up fairly early and hit the road to make it to St. George by the end of the day. We made a few stops along the way and picked up a few New Mexico souvenirs.

We made a stop at Marble Canyon to see the Navajo Bridge.

The bridge is 600+ feet above the river.

It was a cool view and there were condors (or big raptors, I’m no expert mind you) flying from the bridge to the river below. They have a beautiful wing span. Too bad I couldn’t catch them with them opened.

Family Reunion – Day 1

We decided to attend a family reunion in Utah that we haven’t attend in many years. We left Tuesday night and headed for Roswell, NM. It’s a bit of a trek from Austin and we had a late start since Rob needed to leave after work.

Nothing but the open space.
